Do you have a hard time focussing? Perhaps you are forgetting things and you feel confused or disconnected? Your mind isn’t as sharp. Your ability to process new information and communicate your ideas is lacking. You’re tired. You have little energy left over from the effort you are making to try and stay focussed and alert. Brain fog is often the term given to these symptoms when you group them together. Although there are many causes of brain fog, misaligned bones in the spine can be one of them. Have you tried chiropractic care to treat your brain fog and fatigue?
I was inspired to write this article because of a recent patient that came in for chiropractic care. He didn’t come in for back pain or even headaches. He came in because he felt like he was “disconnected”. He told me his mind wasn’t processing things well. He just wasn’t sharp mentally. It was effecting his work production and his ability to communicate well with people in his life. He explained when he gets his atlas adjusted (the first bone in the upper part of his neck) he starts to feel “connected” immediately.
This didn’t surprise me as I have been practicing chiropractic since 1995. I have come across interesting cases like this many times before. So how does adjusting a person’s spine help solve brain fog?
Your brain requires movement from your body to function well. When you move, nerve signals, like electrical impulses, travel from the joints in your body (your spine, your feet, your knees, etc.) up the spinal cord and into your brain. Imagine your brain being “lit up” brightly by all of theses electrical impulses feeding it. Your brain becomes more alert. You can think better, you can move better, and you become stronger.
What do you think happens to the brain when you don’t move regularly? What happens when you sit 8 to 12 hours a day? Your joints seize up over time. Your bones don’t move as well and can become misaligned. Tension in the nerves and muscles develop. The nerve signals from your joints don’t travel to the brain as well. Imagine your well lit brain being “dimmed” or “dummed” down by a dimmer switch. Your brain becomes less alert. You don’t think as well, your movement is restricted, and you become weaker.
A good visual of this is from a clip in the movie “Frankenweenie” by Timothy Burton. Sparky is a lovable wiener dog owned by a boy scientist named Victor Frankenstein. Even though Sparky is hit by a car and dies, young Victor brings him back to life with a combination of bolts in Sparky’s neck, booster cables and electricity. During one scene in the film, Sparky isn’t feeling to energetic. He’s “disconnected” so to speak. Victor decides to “reconnect” him again and gives him a shot of electricity. Sure enough, Sparky gets the boost he needs. Immediately after his “adjustment” he is alert again, tongue hanging out, wagging his tail and ready to play.
Back to our real patient. When I examined this patient, the joint between his skull and the first bone in his neck (atlas) was seized up (misaligned). After doing a specific chiropractic adjustment to his skull to move and realign his bone, his brain fog cleared and he felt “connected” immediately. The adjustment “lit up” his brain. It was like turning the switch back on. I could visualize the nerve impulses firing into his brain. Just like Sparky he was ready to play again.
I love when stuff like this happens to my patients. I felt totally inspired and fulfilled.
When will you be ready to play again?
Having a mobile and aligned spine and healthy robust nerve signals flowing into and out of your brain are vital to your health. Even though there are many causes of brain fog, wouldn’t it be worth giving chiropractic care a try?
