Hi I’m Dr. Dean Collins. I know what’s it’s like to be in pain, to have anxiety, to feel overwhelmed, tired, weak, moody, and to lack focus. I know what’s it’s like to lay awake at night worrying about the past, present, and future, and to go through a day feeling exhausted, unproductive, and putting on a fake smile just to get through the day.
When I was a teenager, I suffered with acute low back pain and knee injuries playing competitive sports. Like many people, we sought out the medical profession for help. My parent’s and I were unsatisfied with their solutions and they decided to take me to their “witch doctor”. Yes, their chiropractor. After experiencing what I considered miraculous results, I became interested in the chiropractic profession and natural healthcare, enrolled in chiropractic college in 1991, and received my Doctor of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 1995.
My health problems didn’t end with back and knee pain as a teenager. For all of my life I have struggled with many symptoms related to blood sugar problems: mood and energy fluctuations, anxiety, focus and concentration difficulties, and sleep problems.
When I was 43, a new friend and colleague of mine, recommended I start looking into how our ancestors of over 10,000 years ago ate and lived. I was intrigued and tweaked my diet and lifestyle to match these hunters and gatherers. Within one week most of the symptoms related to my blood sugar problems I had experienced for almost 40 years went away. Like my first chiropractic experience, this was a miracle for me. Further investigation revealed I also had a gluten intolerance and a hidden parasite infection within my gut. Treating these further enhanced my mental and physical well-being. This experience inspired me to study functional medicine from an ancestral perspective. In 2016, I completed my studies at the Kresser Institute for Functional and Evolutionary Medicine and I have learned how to integrate functional medicine into my chiropractic practice.
Over the years, I have seen many medical doctors and alternative health care practitioners, tried numerous dietary approaches, have taken thousands of dollars worth of supplements, and have spent thousands of hours and dollars on an educational process to learn how to heal myself and others. Although I have been able to solve many of my health problems, I’m still going through a process of solving a few of them. I refuse to give up and I hope you don’t either.
I know how frustrated it feels to struggle with your health for a long time and how helpless you can feel at times. On the flip side, I also know what it feels like to feel strong, pain free, energetic, happy and fulfilled, and clear in my head. I want to tell you that regaining your health is not only possible, it’s well within your reach.
Regaining your health is not only possible, it’s well within your reach.
My fulfillment in my work comes from seeing amazing results with my patients and to see patients take control of their health and transform themselves into stronger, energetic, and more focussed people. I have an immense passion to master my chiropractic technique, to study ancestral nutrition and lifestyle habits and to use my knowledge and skills to help patients like you overcome their health challenges.
I have developed a pretty unique blend of chiropractic care and functional nutrition (aka functional medicine) to deal with acute and chronic health problems: pain (low back pain, neck pain, headaches, etc.), gut problems (irritable bowel syndrome, heartburn and GERD, food intolerances) and fatigue. In chiropractic and functional nutrition we recognize the key to long term healing is addressing the underlying cause of the problem rather than suppressing symptoms as conventional medicine does. We also understand when it comes to treatment, there really isn’t a one size fits all approach. We don’t treat the disease, we treat the individual. And that’s what my approach is all about:
In both chiropractic care and functional nutrition I use a “test, don’t guess” holistic approach with my patients:
- I use Chiropractic Care to help re-establish proper movement and alignment of the spine which in turn is vital to optimize brain and nerve function. I use a technique which tests the patient’s nervous system and strength prior to their treatment, and tests for an increase in their nervous system response and strength after their treatment. (Applied Kinesiology)
- I use Functional Nutrition to investigate the underlying cause of inflammation which is one of the main causes of chronic illness. I use comprehensive lab tests for analyzing the following:
- Gut (infections, imbalances in good and bad bacteria, bacterial overgrowth or SIBO, inflammatory markers)
- Food intolerances
- Hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis Dysfunction (HPA-D) (aka adrenal fatigue) . This is your system that governs your response to stress and your tolerance to stress. We measures levels and imbalances of hormones like cortisol (stress hormone), sex hormones, and melatonin (sleep hormone), and if these hormones are being broken down properly.
- Blood Chemistry
- Treatment might include all or some of the following: dietary changes, supplementation, lifestyle and behaviour modifications.
- The kind of testing and treatment (chiropractic and/or functional nutrition) I recommend is based on a patient’s history, physical examination results, lab results and individual circumstances, goals, and needs.
My goal is to have every patient live pain free, with strength, energy and clear focus so they can pursue and live their dreams. If you’re ready to attain a higher level of health for yourself subscribe to our newsletter or book an appointment.
Holistic Nutritional Consultant
Kat Vernelli is a Certified Holistic Nutritional Consultant currently based out of Edmonton. She has a serious passion for holistic living and loves educating people on healthy eating and well-being. She believes in eating fresh, whole foods, cooking with real ingredients, keeping chemicals out of daily care products and doing what makes you really happy as often as possible.
She wasn’t always a health guru having battled an eating disorder for several years. It wasn’t until she began her journey to healing when she realized just how important real, whole foods were in her life and the vital role they played in creating her mental physical and spiritual well-being. She spent a long time focusing on healing her body from the inside out. She changed her diet, by adding, not deleting. She changed her thoughts, which turned into positive actions, and she learned how to treat her body as a whole using the nutrients from whole foods to restore and maintain balance.
“As a Holistic Nutritional Consultant I don’t believe in a one-size fits all approach to health. What works for one person may not work for the next. We are all biochemically different and unique and each person has individual nutritional needs. My job is to educate you on eating clean and healthy (while not being stressed) by taking small steps to get you where you want to be. I want you live a life of health, love and balance, and I am committed to helping you achieve that.”
I started in massage with the hope I would be able to help people overcome injuries and pain that may be limiting them in their everyday life.
I am constantly taking courses and learning new approaches to better help my clients get back to where they want to be. Whether it be cupping, deep tissue or a general relaxation massage, I customize each treatment for each individual, because no person has the same concerns.
Hi, I’m Wendy Chen. I am a massage therapist located in Edmonton. I was introduced to massage therapy when I had my first herniated disc in 2003. My first massage experience was very positive because it provided not just pain relief, but also reduced the tension and stress I was having from being a full-time student working two part time jobs. After a few sessions, the pain disappeared.
In 2010, I experienced another episode of back pain accompanied with numbing, tingling and burning sensation down the back of my left leg. First person I went to see was a massage therapist because I needed the same relief I felt from the sessions I had 7 years ago. After this occurrence, I became more interested in massage therapy and the effects it had on pain, stress and tension. I thought about going into massage therapy, but I was still building my first career and wasn’t fulfilled from that yet. However, my interest in massage therapy didn’t stop. I received massages on a regular basis, trying various types of massages, seeing different massage therapists and what they each have to offer. I would massage my friends after their soccer and hockey games, and each time, they would tell me to switch careers.
So here I am. I am excited that I now have the knowledge and skills to provide the positive experiences that I have received: relieving pain, reducing tension and stress, providing relaxation and improving sleep. With each massage I provide, I continue to learn and expand my skills in customizing a safe and effective treatment plan for each of my client, with the utmost respect and care.
